I’m a naturalized American citizen. As an immigrant I see my culture:

Someone posted a question and asked what comes to mind when I think about “America”. Here was my response.

  1. Freedom, as symbolized by the ownership of guns, free to assemble and protest, free press to rail against gov’t, oppression and injustice, and free worship. And Freedom to create oneself and one’s future (unequal as that may be)
  2. Capitalism and consumerism — reaching the limits of greed at the expense of others, but can allow for prosperity for some if they play the game right,
  3. Pursuit of Progress, Ingenuity, Innovation and Entrepreneurial Spirit — partly related to capitalism and the freedom to make something of yourself and bring value to the world. It’s led to much innovation and technological progress, and improved the quality of life for so many around the world. The telephone, television, the Internet, need I say more?
  4. Celebrity worship and popularity — misattributing respect, influence and awe due to popularity rather than expertise or earned prestige,
  5. Great storytellers and entertainers. From real life dramas (45 presidency) to fictions (Hollywood), American culture keeps the world enthralled (or appalled).
  6. Charitable. Americans are some of the most giving people on the planet. We fund many endeavors around the world.
  7. Conflicted. Very conflicted. Wanting very much to do good but often impaired by its past sins, lusts for growth and progress, greed, and delusions of grandeur. Lacking self-awareness.

Is America perfect?

By no means.

But it at least she has a clear self-mandate and mission to “be a more perfect nation” even if she stumbles often.

She’ll get there.
